Alexander in Macedonia

The rule of Alexander in Macedonia is regarded to be the golden period in the history of Macedonia. There is no doubt of the fact that it was during the rule of Alexander in Macedonia that Macedonia witnessed the greatest heights of honor and glory.

Alexander was born in the ancient capital city of Macedonia, Pella in the year 356 BC. Alexander was the son of Philip II and Olympias. At the age of 13, he was apprenticed under the tutorship of Aristotle, the genius. In 340 when Philips went to invade Thrace he handed over his power to his 15 year old son, Alexander. When Macedonia was about to be defeated by the Thracian tribe of Maedi, Alexander gathered an army and defeated the Maedi group; establishing the city of Alexandra polis.

Thereafter Alexander further proved his military brilliancy by defeating the Greeks at the Battle of Chaeronea. After Philip II was killed by Pausanias, Alexander III ascended the Macedonian throne. Though after the death of Philips, the Thracians, Illyrians and Greeks tried to gain independence, Alexander acted promptly and forced his way to Greece. He then conquered the northern and southern Greece and by the end of summer 336 BC Greek was completely under his dominion.

Alexander then defeated the Thracians, Illyrians and Tribalians in a series of wars. After rumors of his death spread in Greece, he marched up to the wall of Thebes and after an outrageous war Greece remained under Macedonian dominion. Alexander, the Great led many more victorious battles and captured many areas and at the age of 33, he died an unfortunate death on June 7, 323 BC, without leaving a successor to the Macedonian empire.
