Ptolemy, also known as Claudius Ptolemaeus was among most prominent Greek astronomers, mathematicians and astrologers during the 2 nd century AD. He was born in Hermiou near Alexandria, a Roman colony in Egypt. He was also an expert geographer and cartographer.

Ptolemy is well-known all over the world for his outstanding contributions in the field of mathematics, astronomy, geography and astrology. He has written books on scientific inventions. He had propounded many astrological as well as geographical theories, which were of great significance.

Geographia, one of Ptolemy's major works was highly acclaimed. In this book he has given important information about maps. This book provides topographical details which has proved to be of great help to the contemporary cartographers. His first version of maps was brought out was in the year 1477. It was a map of Bologna.
