A man of many talents, Marinus was equally competent as a cartographer, geographer and mathematician. Hailing from Tyre, Marinus was one of the earliest Greek cartographers.

Considered as the founder of Mathematical Geography, Marinus of Tyre brought a major improvement in cartography by introducing nautical charts. His works were largely focused on the usage of exact longitude and latitude which helped define any place with the help of these two co-ordinates.

Marinus researched extensively and referred old maps and works of well known geographers to create wonderful maps that gained popularity across the world. Another contribution of Marinus is the equi-rectangular projection, which is considered as one of the greatest contributions to the science of map making.
