About Frederick, Maryland
To borrow a thought from an American Quaker poet, John Greenleaf Whittier, Frederick is a city of clustered spires emerging amidst the green hills of Maryland. This crossroads community is the gateway to western Maryland. Founded in 1745, it is the second-largest incorporated city in the state, behind Baltimore. Fancied for its historical district, winding roads, and open fields with fresh country air, Frederick lies roughly 50 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. and west of Baltimore where Catoctin Mountain meets the Piedmont plateau region.
Getting in and Around
By Air – Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK) has a mid-sized airstrip that accommodates regional flights
By Train – The city is served by MARC commuter rail network on Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Subdivision.
By Road – Major roads in the city are intersected by I-70, I-270, U.S. 15, and U.S. 340 highways.

Enjoy the fall foliage (September through November) with arts and crafts at Catoctin Colorfest, German heritage at Schifferstadt’s Oktoberfest, Maryland Pumpkin Festival as well as the beautiful covered bridges.
What's in Frederick
The National Museum of Civil War Medicine, C. Burr Artz Public Library, Rose Hill Manor Park & Children's Museum, and Schifferstadt Architectural Museum are major tourist attractions in Frederick. Visit Monocacy National Battlefield that is the site of the Battle of Monocacy in 1864 during the American Civil War, and check out Weinberg Center that hosts music, theater, comedy, and visual art shows.
Pinecliff Park – along the Monocacy River – comprises four softball fields, horseshoe pits, and picnic areas. Gambril State Park offers several hiking trails weaving through Catoctin Mountain. Cunningham Falls State Park features the 78-feet-tall Cunningham Falls, the largest cascading waterfall in Maryland. Go for hiking, mountain biking, camping, and fishing in Catoctin Mountain Park which is home to the famous Presidential retreat, Camp David.
The Frederick Symphony Orchestra performs five classical concerts per year and the Visitor Center provides a thorough guide to tours in historical downtown. The Great Frederick Fair and Francis Scott Key Mall are popular destinations for shopping.
