Located amidst abundant water resources, wildlife wealth, unique Sand hills and picturesque locales, Atkinson is a great place to spend ones Nebraska holidays. It is a city located in the Holt County in the north-central part of Nebraska, USA. It lies in the Central Standard time zone. The place is in the Elkhorn Valley, near the north bank of the Elkhorn River. State Highway 11 and US Highway 20 intersect at the southeastern edge of the town.
Frank Bitney, who traveled to this part of Nebraska chose the site of present Atkinson, as a way station for the freighters and named it Atkinson after his friend, Colonel John Atkinson. The place got its first post office in 1878 and soon after the town site of Atkinson was officially registered on August 7, 1880. At the turn of the century the famous Opera House was opened, and in 1926, the Crystal Ballroom, now the largest hall in town was built. The Crystal Ballroom was originally built for storing hay. In 1940s, businessmen began to sponsor free barbecue along with "Hay Days." Hay Days is still one of the favorite local events of Atkinson. Some other attractions in this area include Atkinson State Recreation Area, Stuart Country Club, Atkinson Swimming Pool, Holt Creek Ringnecks, Sturdevant-McKee Foundation Museum, etc. A number of Atkinson hotels provide excellent lodging facilities to travelers.
