Clarins was founded in 1954 by Jacques Courtin-Clarins, a medical student of Paris, France. While treating circulatory disorders, he noticed that the skins of his patients showed much improvement when massaged. Hence, he continued his research and established the Clarins Instituts de Beauté .

From the seventies, the Clarins Company was introduced in the global markets and the first subsidiaries were arranged in January 1981, with USA taking the lead. Thus, the institution that initially started by dealing with botanical body oils ultimately became a $1 billion company of beauty and hair care products.

Currently the Clarins Brand consists of Stella Cadente, Azzaro and Thierry Mugler and nineteen distribution subsidiaries all over 150 countries. The present chairman is Christian Courtin-Clarins, the son of Jacques Courtin-Clarins.
