Nicaragua is a constitutional republic where the elected president is the head of the state as well as government. National Assembly is the unicameral legislative body of the government, which consisted of 93 elected members for a tenure of 5-years. Nicaragua Elections facilitate the people to choose their own president and a legislative assembly, who jointly run the government. On one ballot, the President and the vice-president of Nicaragua are elected by the citizens for a term of five year. By the method of proportional representation the 90 deputies of the National Assembly are elected for a tenure of five years.
As Nicaragua has two-party system hence it is very hard for a candidate to register electoral success under the banner of third party. According to the Presidential Election of Nicaragua, a candidate can only win the election if he get a majority of 40 percent of the vote. However the electoral law also states that, a candidate may win the election in Nicaragua if he obtains 35 percent of the vote, but he must have a five percent margin over the next candidate. If none of the candidates achieve the desired success in the election a second-round runoff election could be organized. According to the new election laws if a party four percent of the vote casted in Nicaragua General Election, it will lose its legal status.
The representative chosen by Nicaragua Election runs the government in accordance with the pseudo-parliamentary rules of the country.
