Botswana Democratic Party

The Botswana Democratic Party is by far the most influential party of Botswana. It is controlled by the expertise of the reigning president Festus Mogae. The Botswana Democratic Party is by nature a conservative one. During the last election it fetched an overwhelming figure of 51.7% and got 44 out of 57 seats. Prior to the time of independence in the year 1967, the name of this party was Bechuanaland Democratic Party. During the first general election in the year 1965, the Democratic Party of Botswana won 28 seats out of 31 seats. But from the time of independence this party has been in the continuous ruling spree.

Setswana communities have been the backbone of the Democratic Party of Botswana. The staunch believers of this party are of the opinion that the party provides steady development, transparent democratic rule and stability and self sufficiency in all the spheres compared to the other countries in Africa. However, the present scenario of this party is a bit vulnerable. Certain conflicts are there among certain sections of the people and due to this the party is on the verge of split. However, only after the next election, the fate of the Botswana Democratic Party will be officially declared.

Some eminent figures of this party are Festus Mogae, Ian Khama, Sir Quett Masire, Sir Seretse Khama and Gaositwe K.T. Chiepe.
