Yemen fighting: Pro-government forces launch offensive on Zinjibar

  • Pro-government forces have launched an attack on Zinjibar, the capital of Yemen’s Abyan province which is under the control of Shia Houthi rebels, reports say.

Troops are taking the help of Saudi-supplied military equipment to target the city from two directions.

If the offensive is successful, it would be another defeat for the rebels, who have lost key areas in recent fighting, including the southern port city of Aden.

The Houthi rebels, believed to be backed by Iran, also have the support of loyalists of former Yemini president Ali Abdullah Saleh.
