July 20 , 2015
Hissène Habré, the former dictator of Chad, will go on trial in Senegal, facing accusations of crimes against humanity, torture and war crimes committed between 1982 and 1990, when he ruled the African country with an iron fist.
In a landmark for Africa, this is the first time that the courts of a country will prosecute the former leader of another country of the continent for alleged human rights crimes.
Habré has been accused of running a secret police network that tortured, executed and arrested thousands of people.
