Virginity test allegations re-emerge in Egypt
February 24 , 2014
The resumption of forced virginity tests in Egypt has dashed the hopes of activists for democratic reforms.
Reports suggest that four women arrested recently said they were made to take virginity tests by the police. First-hand accounts of their experience have been published online by BuzzFeed.
These crimes hint at the return of the practice aimed at terrorizing female protestors. One of the detainees at Qanater Prison mentioned that she was forced to undergo a test in January. "I thought the tests were history," she said. "I thought we had left them behind in the days of Mubarak."
