Vietnam: New law paves way for transgender rights
November 25 , 2015
Vietnam has passed a law that enshrines rights for transgender people that may pave the way for gender reassignment surgery in the country.
Today, people seeking the surgery often go to places like Thailand as it is illegal in Vietnam.
As per the new legislation, which will come into effect only in 2017, those who undergo the operation can register under their new gender.
A parliament report said the move was a bid to “meet the demands of a part of society… without countering the nation’s traditions”.
