UN said it stopped updating death toll in Syria
January 8 , 2014
The UN said it has quit updating the death toll from the Syrian civil war since the human rights office has failed to verify where the information regarding the last count originated from.
A spokesman blamed the organization for failing to provide new information itself and being unable to verify the material from other sources.
Reports suggest that the UN made an effort to estimate the total toll by looking at six figures from different nongovernmental organizations.
"For the past year or so, it's been down to two or a maximum of three, and we simply didn't feel that it was possible for us to continue in the same way," Rupert Colville said, adding that the UN can't promote any other organization's count.
