U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says Sanctions on North Korea to Continue Till End of Nuclear Program

  • U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, on the sidelines of Shangri-la dialogue in Singapore, said on Sunday that North Korea will be relieved of the sanctions only if it undertakes clear and irreversible steps for ending their nuclear program. At the start of a meeting with Japanese and South Korean Defense ministers, Mattis put an end to the concern that the USA is rushing to strike deal with North Korea during the upcoming historic summit on June 12. He went on to say that “a bumpy road to the” negotiations can be anticipated. Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said that Japan, the US, and South Korea agree that continued pressure application on North Korea is needed.
