Turkey ban studio apartments
September 29 , 2013
Turkey's new rules put into effect this month outlaw studio apartments. The government has claimed it will cut down on those who illegally rent their studio apartments to tourists. However, critics see the situation differently: Leaders want to encourage people to get married instead of living alone.
One 25-year old woman mentioned that it looks if as "they're trying to force marriage on us."
This is not a baseless accusation and the story's background does provide context. It was only this year when a mayor of a district in Istanbul spoke negatively of one-bedroom apartments since they don't "appeal to families."
Another leader also encouraged architects to build homes that compliment the family culture and values of the nation.
The ban on studio apartment comes as the number of people living alone in Turkey rose to 1 million in a decade.
