Syrian PM Halqi survives Damascus car bombing
April 30 , 2013
Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi survived a car bomb attack in the capital, Damascus, on Monday. The blast occurred in the western Mazzeh district, targeting Halqi's convoy as it drove through.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, one of Halqi's bodyguards was among several others killed.
It is not yet known whether the blast was a suicide bombing or a planted device. Media reports suggest the explosion was the result of a bomb placed underneath a parked car.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. However, similar bombings in the past have been linked to the jihadist al-Nusra Front, a rebel group fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
