Spanish Government Desperately Tries to Foil October 1 Catalonia Referendum Voting
September 17 , 2017
With October 1 referendum (to decide whether Catalonia secedes from Spain and becomes an independent republic) just two weeks from now, Spanish central government has called the referendum as well as the laws passed by the Catalan parliament unconstitutional. Spanish government has also threatened to take control of Catalonia’s finances by September 18, abolish regional autonomy, bar the leaders from holding office, and put them behind bars. Catalan police force (Mossos d’Esquadra) has been ordered by the Spanish government to prevent holding of the referendum voting. WikiLeaks’s Julian Assange is reportedly helping Carles Puigdemont’s government in defending the official referendum website from being shut down by the Civil Guard.
