South Africa's Zuma fires police chief
June 13 , 2012
South African President Jacob Zuma has fired police chief General Bheki Cele, following accusations of corruption.
Cele is to be replaced by Mangwashi Phiyega, making her the country's first female police chief.
Cele, whose predecessor was jailed for corruption, was suspended in October after it emerged he was allegedly involved with unlawful property deals. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Last year, corruption investigator, Thuli Madonsela, ruled that police buildings in the capital Pretoria and the eastern city of Durban were leased from a company at inflated prices.
