Putin Reaches India Amidst Protests

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India on Monday for a summit in which important defense deals are expected to be concluded between the two nations. The two countries are expected to discuss bilateral trade and investment and joint energy ventures. Russia is looking to supply India 40 Sukhoi fighter jets and 50 helicopters. The deal is estimated to cost India about $7 billion. President Putin is planning to meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, President Pranab Mukherjee and other senior leaders.
Delhi is currently raging under protests against the gang-rape of a girl last week. There has been much public outcry against the current laws concerning sexual abuse and the police and protestors are engaged in a conflict in the Indian capital.
