Northern Ireland one step closer to ban on paying for sex
October 21 , 2014
The Stormont assembly has backed a proposal to impose a ban on paying for sex in Northern Ireland, media reports say.
The measure is similar to a model adopted by Sweden that targets clients of sex workers.
Though the legislation will need to pass further stages before it is written into law, the considerable support for it means it is likely to come into effect.
Those supporting the ban say it will cut down human trafficking. But opponents of the move say it would only drive prostitution underground.
