New laws will turn Iranian women into 'baby-making machines': Amnesty

  • Amnesty International has slammed draft laws in Iran which aim to boost the country’s birth rate.

The rights body warned that the proposed laws would turn Iranian women into "baby-making machines” and constituted a huge setback to women’s rights.

According to one proposal, voluntary sterilization and promotion of birth control would be banned. Another proposal makes it tougher for women with no babies to find jobs.

Amnesty International said that the Iranian government was “promoting a dangerous culture” in which women would be “stripped of key rights”.
