Man given life sentence in Anni Dewani murder

  • A South African man has been jailed for life for the murder of Swedish woman Anni Dewani on her honeymoon in Cape Town in 2010.

Xolile Mngeni, 25, was found guilty by a court in Cape Town of firing the shot that killed her and was handed the sentence on Wednesday.

His co-accused said they helped kill Dewani, 28, and were following orders from her husband Shrien Dewani.

Mrs Dewani was shot after a taxi she was in was hijacked in the township of Gugulethu near Cape Town

Her husband, 32, from the United Kingdom, is accused of arranging her murder but denies all charges.

An extradition order for Mr Dewani to face trial in South Africa had previously been agreed but was halted by a London High Court on mental health grounds.

Mngeni's trial had been previously delayed while he had surgery to remove a brain tumor.

In August, a judge ruled that Mngeni, who denied charges of murder, kidnapping, robbery and illegal possession of a firearm, was fit to stand trial.
