Madagascar's Lalao Ravalomanana to run for president

  • The wife of Madagascar's ousted President Marc Ravalomanana submitted her papers on Thursday to run in July's election. The former leader's allies have said Lalao Ravalomanana was their "natural candidate".

Supporters of Andry Rajoelina, backed by the military, forced Marc Ravalomanana to step down in 2009.

Under regional pressure, both men have agreed not to run in the elections.

Lalao Ravalomanana's candidacy is still to be approved by the electoral court. According to media reports, she has not lived in Madagascar, which is required by the law. She fled to South Africa with her husband after he was forced to resign.

Political commentators have condemned the move as a means to enable the former leader to come back into power.
