Japan's new island looks like a cartoon figure
January 1 , 2014
The shape of a cartoon figure is rising out of the volcanic ash of the newest island in Japan.
The country waited to name the island in November when it just began to form off the coast of Nishinoshima island. However, the island multiplied instead and became eight times as bigger.
The outline of Niijima looks a lot like that of Snoopy and the landmass was soon named "Snoopy island" on Twitter.
Although, there's a chance for the island to stay permanently, a Japanese volcanologist mentioned that it could be undone by erosion.
