Japan: Nine choke to death while eating rice cakes
January 5 , 2015
At least nine people have reportedly died in the holiday season in Japan after choking on mochi, traditional sticky rice cakes that are consumed in large amounts on festive occasions.
Eating the glutinous and starchy delicacy claims several lives every year, with the elderly and children particularly vulnerable, according to media reports.
But the number of casualties this new year are higher than usual, with more than a dozen people hospitalized in a serious condition.
Senior citizens often constitute a majority of the victims as they find it difficult to swallow the cakes, media reports said.
