Eduard Shevardnadze, the Soviet foreign minister under President Mikhail Gorbachev and former president of Georgia, died at the age of 86.
Shevardnadze played a key role in ending the Cold War and adopted Gorbachev’s policy of “perestroika” or change, in the Soviet Union.
However, later during his 11-year-rule in Georgia, he was widely seen as dictatorial and corrupt by the people of the new republic. He was ousted from power during the peaceful Rose Revolution.
