Dozens killed in Afghan blasts

  • Forty-eight people have died and more than 130 injured in a spate of bombings in the southwest and northern regions of Afghanistan.

A majority of the victims were shopping for the weekend's Eid celebrations that mark the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan.

Thirty-six people were killed in four suicide bombings in Zaranj, close to the Iranian border in the southwest.

Twelve people in the northern province of Kunduz were killed in the second blast.

In both provinces, the bombers attacked crowded markets.

The blasts follow a series of deadly attacks by infiltrators within the Afghan security forces against their colleagues and coalition troops.
