Court convicts senior Indian politician, sends her to jail
September 28 , 2014
In a judgment that has sent shockwaves through the political corridors of south India’s Tamil Nadu state, a court in Bangalore sentenced chief minister Jayalalitha to four years jail in an 18-year-old corruption case.
Jayalalitha, an actress-turned-larger-than-life politician who has been a dominating presence in Tamil Nadu for more than two decades, was also fined Rs 1 billion ($16 million) after her conviction in the case of unaccounted wealth.
Though her lawyers are likely to file an appeal, her jail term has already begun and she can no longer hold the chief minister's post.
