Costa Concordia disaster: Italian ship's captain sentenced to prison for manslaughter

  • Francesco Schettino, the Costa Concordia cruise ship captain, has been sentenced to a 16-year-term for manslaughter, by an Italian court.

Schettino captained the liner that sank and killed 32 people in 2012. According to the charges against him, he took the ship very close to the shore and later abandoned the sinking liner though the passengers and crew were still on board.

The Costa Concordia is believed to have hit rocks, causing it to sink.

Denying the charges, Schettino, 54, said the accident was the entire crew’s collective failure.
