Chinese Court Orders Retrial of Canadian Citizen Charged with Drug Smuggling

  • A Canadian citizen Robert Lloyd Schellenberg has been put on retrial by a Chinese court on drug smuggling charges. The court judgment comes after prosecutors said on Saturday that 15 years sentencing was too light. The Chinese court agreed with the prosecutor’s view that Robert can be part of an international racket of drugs and therefore 15 years imprisonment is light sentencing. The court on November 20 sentenced 15-years imprisonment to Robert Lloyd Schellenberg. The foreign ministry said in Ottawa that they are aware of the case and will keep providing consular assistance to Schellenberg. Reports say this retrial order may worsen the relation between China and Canada.
