Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng set to leave Beijing
May 19 , 2012
Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng has told reporters he is set to fly to the U.S. despite not having a passport.
Last month, Chen spent six days at the U.S. embassy in Beijing after escaping house arrest in north-eastern China.
The self-taught lawyer had been confined to his home following a four-year prison sentence over his legal support for victims of forced abortions and sterilizations under China’s one-child policy.
The blind activist said he had been offered a place at New York University and was being accompanied by his wife and two children.
The U.S. has said visas for Chen and his family are ready.
