Chile: 'Abnormal' rain in northern desert region triggers floods; at least 17 dead
April 1 , 2015
At least 17 people have been killed and 20 remain missing after heavy rain in Chile led to floods in the northern areas, the government has said.
Last week’s heavy rains led to the overflowing of rivers and flash-floods. Power supplies were also knocked out in some areas, and roadblocks have been reported.
The government has announced that it would release $10 million to help the affected areas.
The abnormal weather conditions in Chile's Atacama desert have been described as the worst “rain disaster” in eight decades.
