Canada: PM Stephen Harper calls election for October 19
August 3 , 2015
Canada’s prime minister Stephen Harper has called for a general election for October 19. He asked David Johnston, the governor general, to dissolve parliament.
Harper’s Conservative Party has been in power since 2006. Security issues and the economy are likely to be the focus of his campaign. However, political pundits believe it may be difficult for the prime minister to form a majority government again.
If he succeeds, he will become the first PM to win four straight parliamentary polls in more than a century.
