Burundi: President Nkurunziza goes ahead with polls amid chaos

  • Burundi is going to polls despite claims that President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term is illegal and weeks of turmoil that has triggered an exodus from the African country.

    Tens of thousands of Burundians, including senior political figures such as parliament head Pie Ntavyohanyuma, have fled the country in recent weeks.

    Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary General, has also backed calls for delaying the elections amid a poll boycott by Burundi's opposition.
