Assad may run for re-election

  • The President of Syria, Bashar Assad said it's too early to know as to whether or not he'll run for re-election next year. He mentioned that the answer won't become clear immediately since the country is going through some "rapid" changes; it will take him another four to five months to be sure.

Assad has been president since 2000 and his second seven year long term ends mid-next year; the country's opposition wants him to hand over full powers to a transitional government until new elections are held.

Although more than 110,000 people have died in his country over the last two-and-a-half years, he's still supported by minorities such as Christians and Alawites.

Assad mentioned that he "will not run" if the Syrians don't want him.
