50 killed in Xinjiang unrest, China now says
September 26 , 2014
Sunday’s violence in Xinjiang claimed 50 lives, the Chinese state media has reported, a dramatic increase in the death toll from the earlier reported figure of just two.
Those killed include six civilians and four policemen, the reports said, while 40 “rioters” were among the dead. The police described the violence as a “serious terrorist attack,” in Luntai county.
Around 45% of the population of Xinjiang, a region in China’s far west, are Muslim Uighurs. Han Chinese comprise 40% of the population. Violent incidents have increased in the region in recent years.
