Report: $1bn stolen in 'unprecedented' cyber robberies

  • An estimated $1 billion has been stolen in cyber-attacks targeting around 100 financial institutions and banks around the world, a new report says.

Describing the online robberies, which are reportedly still ongoing, as “unprecedented”, Kaspersky Lab says a cybercriminal gang, whose members include Russian, Ukrainian and Chinese nationals, is behind the thefts.

According to the computer security firm, the cyber-thefts started in 2013 and took place in around 30 countries including Russia, US, China, Germany and Canada.

The gang targets banks directly rather than the end users, Kaspersky said.
