July 4 , 2013
New York City is set to get its own .nyc domain name to be used by local businesses and residents.
The city's petition for the creation of its own domain name has been approved by net address regulator Icann.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said this placed the city at the “forefront of the digital landscape".
Applications to use the domain will open later this year. In order to register, applicants will be required have a physical address in New York City.
Other cities that have already passed Icann's "initial evaluations” include London and Paris.
