Facebook shuts its email service

  • Facebook has quietly killed off its email service, which many users weren't even aware of. The service was called a "Gmail killer" before it got launched in 2010 but it never managed to catch the attention of Facebook users.

The company mentioned that this move is the result of people not using their Facebook email addresses. "We can focus on improving our mobile messaging experience for everyone," it said.

However, Josh Constine of TechCrunch notes that it still may be a good idea for users to turn off their automatic email forwarding from Facebook since "anyone will be able to get your Facebook username by finding your profile's URL and sticking it in front of @facebook.com to be able to hit your real email address with a message."
