Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics organizers unveil Olympic torch

  • The organizers of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics unveiled a futuristic torch on Monday, which combines the folklore of Russia with space-age technology.

    "The Olympic torch is one of the key symbols of the Games," Sochi 2014 chief Dmitry Chernyshenko said at a press conference in Moscow.

    "In our case, it symbolises the beauty and diversity of Russia.”

    The torch is red and silver in color. Red symbolizes the color of Russian sport while silver is the most popular in Olympic torch history.

    The torch relay begins in the ancient Greek town of Olympia on October 7. At around 40,000 miles, it will be the longest in Winter Olympic history,

    Some 14,000 torchbearers will carry the torch through 2,900 towns and villages across all 83 regions of the vast nation.
