Manchester United signs sponsorship deal with Azeri telecom firm

  • English Premier League football club Manchester United has signed a sponsorship deal with Bakcell, a telecoms company in Azerbaijan.

The three-year agreement was announced on Monday and is one of a number of local sponsorship deals signed by United, who boast a vast global fan base.

Bakcell will broadcast the club's MUTV channel in Azerbaijan. Its mobile subscribers will be offered club news and video highlights.

"This new agreement is another first for Manchester United, with it being the only partnership the club has in the country," its commercial director Richard Arnold said.

United have some 659 million followers across the world, according to a survey commissioned by the club earlier this year.

Around 1.68 million of them are in Azerbaijan, a nation with a population of 9 million people.
