General Prayuth Chan-ocha is nominated Thailand's prime minister

  • Prayuth Chan-ocha, the 60-year-old leader of Thailand's junta, is the country’s new prime minister.

The general’s nomination to the top post was a mere formality as the assembly that voted for him was reportedly hand-picked by the military regime, and he was the only candidate.

In May, Gen Prayuth as head of the army had led a coup after months of confrontation between the then government of Yingluck Shinawatra and opposition parties.

Though the military has said it intends to hold general elections late next year, some analysts believe that Gen Prayuth has consolidated his power.
