Original manuscript of Don McLean's 'American Pie' sells for $1.2mn

  • Don McLean’s original ‘American Pie’ manuscript has reportedly sold for $1.2 million at an auction in New York.

The 69-year-old singer had earlier indicated that the 16-page draft would reveal the lyrical meaning of the iconic song.

American Pie's lyrics have been much debated in the US ever since the eight-minute song stormed to the top of the American charts in 1972.

The manuscript includes several drafts along with McLean's handwritten notes.
