Helen Macdonald wins Samuel Johnson prize
November 5 , 2014
Helen Macdonald’s H is for Hawk has won the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction.
The jury described it as a “book unlike any other”. It is the first memoir to win the £20,000 prize, media reports said.
It is a story of how Macdonald, a poet and historian, trained her own goshawk to help her deal with her father’s death. Macdonald says that birds of prey obsessed her from a young age.
The shortlist included a Roy Jenkins’ biography and an account of Vichy France.
