Why don't Americans dream of free time?

The AP predicted in 1950 that the year 2000 will come with the law making sure that there are shorter work weeks in America. Today, France has banned work email after 6 pm and a town in Sweden is experimenting with shorter weekdays.
Futurists had expected decades ago that technology will make it possible for workers to enjoy leisure time. Despite the fact that worker productivity has substantially risen since 1950, real wages haven't.
Matt Novak of Paleofuture said the problem is that work and labor have been politicized. "We forget that paid time off used to be as American as Mickey Mantle riding an eagle through the Grand Canyon with two fistfuls of apple pie."
