Search for Vatican bank chief successor continues

  • The Vatican has not yet started to consider who may succeed Italian Gotti Tedeschi as head of the Vatican bank, a person familiar with the situation.

This comes after former Bundesbank head Hans Tietmeyer came into the picture to fill the post.

Tedeschi, however, faced a no-confidence vote by the bank's board last Thursday.

Italian newspapers have reported that Pope Benedict, a German, was eyeing Tietmeyer as a successor. Tietmeyer headed the German central bank from 1993 to 1999.

Tedeschi was removed as director of the Vatican bank last week for dereliction of duty.
