Moscow makes fresh bid for resource-rich Arctic shelf
August 5 , 2015
Russia has again stepped up its efforts to get the UN to recognize its claims over vast swaths of oil and gas rich Arctic territory. A UN commission had rejected a similar move by Moscow in 2001.
The Russian foreign ministry says the fresh bid on 463,000 sq miles of the Arctic Shelf has scientific data to back it. However, the other key countries in the Arctic region - Denmark, Norway, the US and Canada - reject Russia’s claim.
