May 11 , 2013
Seven people were arrested in New York, U.S., for being part of a global network of hackers who are believed to have stolen over $45 million from ATMs across the world.
A gang of cyber criminals withdrew the money from bank ATMs in 27 countries sending security teams of prepaid debit cards into a tizzy.
In New York City alone, the scammers used 2,904 ATM machines within a little over 10 hours and withdrew $2.4 million. The operations involved sophisticated computer hackers working in close association with common street criminals; the hackers collected information that was required to loot the ATMs.
