Yemen: UN adopts resolution, urges Houthi rebels to cede power
February 16 , 2015
Adopting a unanimous resolution, the United Nations Security Council has demanded that Yemen’s Shia Houthi rebels, who ousted the government this month, cede power with immediate effect.
However, the resolution is not militarily enforceable, contrary to what other Gulf nations were hoping.
With the Houthis expanding their base from their bastion in northern Yemen, the chances of clashes with Sunni groups including the al-Qaeda have increased.
In a stark warning issued a few days ago, the UN had indicated that the country is “collapsing”.
