Xi Jinping presides over first state commemoration of Nanjing massacre
December 13 , 2014
China’s president Xi Jinping has led his country’s first state commemoration of the 1937 Nanjing massacre.
China says around 300,000 civilians were massacred in Nanjing after Japanese troops occupied it in 1937; Japan disputes these figures.
The ceremony to mark the massacre is among three new state holidays in memory of the China-Japan conflict.
During the Nanjing ceremony, some 10,000 people maintained a minute’s silence to honor those who were killed, media reports said.
